An eight-year-old Filipino-American nabbed a major role in the Disney film “A Wrinkle In Time.”
After a grueling seven-month audition, Deric McCabe was handpicked to play the role of whiz kid Charles Wallace Murry in the upcoming film based on the 1960s award-winning sci-fi novel written by Madeleine L’Engle.
McCabe will star alongside Hollywood heavyweights such as Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Michael Peña, André Holland and Storm Reid, who will portray Charles’ on-screen sister, Meg Murry. The film will be directed by Ava DuVernay, penned by Jennifer Lee and produced by Jim Whitaker and Catherine Hand.
The story revolves around Meg who sojourns on a mission with her brother Charles and friend Calvin O’ Keefe to bring home their estranged father.
In a heartfelt Instagram post on Wednesday, McCabe’s mother posted a slideshow of her son’s odyssey to his celebrity ambition. “Deric worked hard for this: hours of auditions, callbacks, meeting, interviews…17 page, 5 page, 3 page, 21 page, scripts to learn overnight…while continuing to spend time with family, do his regular chores, and excel in school. He prayed, remained patient, and was persistent,” she captioned the clip.
Aside from “A Wrinkle in Time,” MCabe is currently working on several projects including “Hold On,” “Stephanie” and “XXIII Boss.”
The shooting kicked off this week in Los Angeles, California, and the whole cast will travel to New Zealand for a two-week intense shooting. Gianna Francesca Catolico
