In the Vedas, three ways are cited for a person to learn—from experience (the hardest), through observation, and from the wise words of a qualified teacher. Other proverbs that speak about teachers and the crucial role they play:
- Where the pupils are willing, the teachers will appear. (Sincere students are blessed with qualified teachers. He who seeks knowledge shall find the right instructor.) —Italian
- The world is a good teacher, but it charges a huge fee. (Learning by experience through worldly adventures costs time, money and energy. Learning about the truth is a long process.) —French
- A wise teacher makes learning a joyful experience. (A good teacher inspires and enlightens.)
- We can learn from the mistakes of other people. (The errors of others teach lessons we shouldn’t ignore.) —Estonian
Diligent study
- Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher. (A qualified teacher can impart wisdom because he has seen the truth.) —Japanese
- Time is a teacher. (The Supreme Being is represented by time. As such, time shows the truth as much as the world’s realities.) —African
