Brillante Mendoza’s “Ma’ Rosa” opens today at selected cinemas nationwide.
The film was the Philippine entry to the recently concluded Cannes Film Festival. It won the Best Actress Award for Jaclyn Jose who played the titular role.

The social realist drama tells the story of small-time drug dealers who fall prey to crooked policemen.
“The film is not only about corruption and drugs. We will see the essence of the family; how [the characters] helped one another and came together amidst this kind of struggle in life,” Mendoza said during the film’s press screening on Monday.
Mendoza added he has no plans anymore to make “Ma’ Rosa” an entry in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival, contrary to what he announced last May.

“We decided to show it now because it’s timely, following the inauguration of President Duterte… because of the theme and also it is holiday on Wednesday,” he said.
Mendoza feels ecstatic that the film will finally be shown in local theaters. “This is for the Filipinos. We will find out what kind of talent we have, what story we do carry and why we are very much appreciated abroad.” TVJ
