We keep reminding stars to not rest on their laurels but to constantly come up with attention-calling projects and talent showcases to energize their careers and delight and “surprise” their fans. So, we’re happy to see that some TV-film luminaries are becoming more proactive in “freshening up” their decades-long career this year.
Topping our list of “surprising” stars this season is singer-actress Regine Velasquez, who has just launched her new comedy series, “Poor Señorita,” on GMA 7, after the evening newscast.
The new series’ prominent “positioning” indicates that GMA has high hopes that it will do well in competition with the dramas usually telecast on weekday nights. Variety is the spice? —Could be, depending on how the new show is handled.
In any case, Regine is the right choice for the “dramedy” experiment, because she’s known for her sassy and saucy view of life. She’s also not above poking fun at herself—a welcome trait for a stellar performer to have.
What’s “Poor Señorita” about? As the series’ title suggests, it’s about a rich and arrogant woman who is humbled by unexpected financial and medical reversals that knock the hot air out of her puffed-up balloon, forcing her to learn valuable lessons that viewers can also benefit from.
Going indie
Other stars offering something new this season include Piolo Pascual and John lloyd Cruz, who’ve “gone indie” in a big way, acting for Lav Diaz’s latest cinematic opus, “Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis,” which recently won big in the Berlin International Film Festival.
The film is being shown in some local movie houses, and viewers are enjoined to go patronize it, even if it’s eight hours long.
Having watched long productions before, we know we’re up to it—and the good news is that the film is doing unexpectedly well. So, see you at the cineplex!
