A thousand years ago in ancient China, So Dongpo gained fame as a scholar at age 20, especially after placing second in an imperial exam, whose participants included 400 scholars. He was gifted with intelligence and a rare writing talent that caught the attention of the kingdom’s most powerful men. In due time, he was given a high position in the palace.
One day, however, Dongpo offended the prime minister and was fired from his job. He continued to put his literary skills to good use by exposing the ills of society. This did not endear him to top officials—in fact, he was hauled off to prison!
He was banished from the city after his release—and was cut off from the kingdom’s activities! He moved to the countryside with his young son and lived a fruitful life. He continued to write and remained happy despite many difficulties.
One day, a friend asked Dongpo, “How can you remain positive after the ordeal that you went through?” He replied, “My strong values keep me happy.” His wisdom and strength of character helped him endure and rise above his problems. He didn’t want power or fame, but found fulfillment in the beauty of simple living!
