‘Goosebumps’ scares up big win at box office

LOS ANGELES, United States — “Goosebumps,” based on spooky children’s books by R.L. Stine, shot straight to the top of the North American box office over the weekend, industry figures showed Monday.
Sony’s action-comedy pulled in $23.6 million in ticket revenue Friday to Sunday in its debut in Canada and the United States, tracker Exhibitor Relations said.
The children’s flick knocked “The Martian,” which brought in $21.3 million, out of the top spot.
The critically acclaimed blockbuster starring Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars has now made $143.6 million in its three weeks in theaters.
New release “Bridge of Spies” came in third with $15.4 million.
The well-received drama by Steven Spielberg tells the story of an American lawyer, played by Tom Hanks, recruited by the CIA during the Cold War to help rescue a pilot held in the Soviet Union.
Fourth at the box office was director Guillermo del Toro’s R-rated horror-fantasy “Crimson Peak,” also making its debut in cinemas, with $13.1 million.
Rounding out the top five was “Hotel Transylvania 2” ($12.6 million), a sequel starring animated ghouls voiced by an all-star cast.
“Beasts of No Nation,” the first movie produced by Netflix and simultaneously released Friday in both theaters and on its online streaming platform, earned $50,700 in limited release at 31 theaters.
