Jerrold Tarog’s highly acclaimed historical epic “Heneral Luna” could have been an instant box office hit if “Eat Bulaga’s” on-screen loveteam of actor Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza or “Yaya Dub” appeared in the film, comedian-host Joey de Leon said in jest on Monday.

In a post on Twitter, the Eat Bulaga mainstay joked that Heneral Luna could have appealed immediately to viewers if Richards played a cameo role of national hero Jose Rizal, and Mendoza as Sisa, a character in Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

“’Yung Heneral Luna siguradong box office hit agad kung binigyan ng cameo role si Alden as Rizal and Maine as… SISA!” De Leon tweeted on Monday.

As of writing, De Leon’s tweet garnered more than 4,700 retweets and 8,500 favorites.

Now on its fourth week, Heneral Luna breached the P170-million mark in the box office, despite initial fears that it would be pulled out early from the cinemas to give way to foreign and more mainstream local films.

It was chosen as the Philippines’ bet in the 2016 Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film category. YG
