American singer-actor Nick Jonas on Wednesday said he was honored to play a gay character in the new Fox thriller-comedy series “Scream Queens.”
“I’ve been so honored to play some really strong gay characters,” Jonas said in a report by Entertainment Tonight (ET).
Asked for his message to the lesbian, gays, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, he added: “I think it’s all about being true to who you are … Whatever I can do for the community is just a blessing for me.”
Jonas teased on his role as a college student named Boone, who would develop a crush on his big brother in the university’s golf fraternity.
“Boone is very intense … He’s got a lot under the surface that you don’t see at first, and it all unravels as the show goes on,” Jonas said.
“For Boone in particular, and this show as a whole, everything is not as it seems,” he said. “So I would say get ready to be surprised by a lot of different things. In his heart of hearts, that may be who he is, but we’ll have to find out as we watch,” he added.
Boone would be Jonas’ second gay role on television, after he played the character of mixed martial arts fighter Nate Kulina in the hit series “Kingdom.”
In Kingdom’s first season finale, Kulina was hinted to be gay as he fell into another man’s embrace after being rejected in a gay bar.
Jonas said Kulina’s story of self-acceptance would “evolve” in the second season. YG/RC
