THE POPULAR song, “Anak,” chronicled the relationship of a loving father and his prodigal son. It touched a lot of people who could relate to the situation that drove the protagonists apart.
The Vedas describe a similar situation involving the Supreme Soul and the soul of an individual. In the story, the person has turned his face away from the Supreme Soul, who’s trying to guide him via what is acknowledged by sages as the “conscience”—or the voice within.
For example, when a person is about to do something wrong, a voice inside tells him not to do it—he’s uneasy and hesitant. This is due to the presence of the Supreme Soul in his heart, who tries to protect him and shove him away from harm.
If a person is humble and sincere, he follows the Supreme Person. But if he is arrogant, he turns away from the Supreme—and finds no inner peace. His home in our hearts is disturbed by rebelliousness, lovelessness and disrespect.
When a son rebels against his father, he may leave home out of anger. Sometimes, this results in injury or tragedy—which often happens when a person allows anger to rule his heart!
People seek inner peace and love—which can only be found in the heart. When there’s harmony between man’s soul and the Supreme, the result is inner peace, happiness and satisfaction!
