Last April 12, we attended the Director’s Guild of the Philippines’ induction of new members, namely Doy del Mundo, Sari Lluch Dalena, Andoy Ranay, Mae Cruz-Alviar, Emmanuel “Manny” Palo, Tara Illenberger, Eduardo Roy Jr., Alvin Yapan, Louie Ignacio and Armand Reyes.

To be a DGPI member, a director has to have a credible body of work. One does not apply, but is invited by its board, led by Joel Lamangan and Emmanuel “Maning” Borlaza. Del Mundo beams, “Thank you for accepting senior citizens!”

The newly married Cruz-Alviar beams, “It’s an honor to be here! This is a big deal for me. I want to help raise funds for the guild’s projects.” Dalena adds, “Thank you for inviting women directors. The longevity, discipline and commitment of veteran filmmakers are inspiring.”

Ignacio exclaims, “Feeling ko, legit (legitimate) na ako. My idols are among its members and founders. I feel like I’ve just been given a masteral or doctoral degree.”

Yapan, who just finished his new film, “Ang Kubo sa Kawayanan,” declares, “I feel flattered about this—may kilig factor. At the same time, I hope I can help with the serious issues that were brought up during the meeting!”
