MANILA, Philippines–Musician and activist Jim Paredes has sought the help of the Philippine National Police after receiving a death threat via Twitter from someone who wanted him to stop taking online swipes at Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Paredes went to the office of the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) in Camp Crame Thursday night to report the menacing tweet from a certain Rex Vincent Tecson.
Tecson’s post read: “Ikaw Mr. @Jimparedes aalamin namin ang bahay mo dyan sa Manila. Salvage ang abot mo sa oras mag-mention ka pa uli kay @VPJojoBinay.” (You, Mr. Paredes, we will look for your house there in Manila. You will be ‘salvaged’ [killed] the moment you mention VP Jojo Binay again.)
ACG intelligence head Chief Insp. Jay Guillermo on Friday said his office was still “verifying the Twitter account involved and who owns it.”
According to its profile, the account handle @RexVTecson was created in October 2012, with the owner supposedly based in Regensburg, Germany.
The account had over 9,300 tweets as of Friday but the threatening message had been deleted.
Paredes, 63, a member of the popular musical trio Apo Hiking Society, is also a producer, writer, educator and photographer. He is currently a board member of Kaya Natin!, a group that promotes good governance. Julie M. Aurelio
