MANILA, Philippines—Batangas Governor Vilma Santos’ husband believes that she is also eligible to receive the National Artist award.

Dodging reporters’ questions on Tuesday about the governor’s political plans, Senate Pro Tempore Ralph Recto instead joked about his wife having many movie offers.

“Marami syang offer ng mga pelikula ngayon (She has a lot of movie offers now),”  Recto told reporters.

But when pressed about Santos’ political plans, the senator said:  “Palagay ko sa mga darating na panahon, I think both of them with Nora are eligible for the  National Artist awards.”

(I think in the future, I think both of them with Nora are eligible for the National Artist awards.)

Recto was referring to Nora Aunor, whose nomination as National Artist for film was rejected by President Benigno Aquino III.

Told that Aquino rejected  Aunor’s  nomination because of her drug case, the senator said:  “Wala akong alam dun. Ang alam ko lang I think she’s eligible for the National Artist Award at ’pag nauna sya e di susunod na rin si V.”

Recto is part of the administration’s Liberal Party being headed by the President.
