Pertinent significance boosts new film-TV projects
BIEBER. So much for his boy-next-door image.
For months now, we’ve been wondering when the hit US TV series, “The Bible,” will finally be shown in the Philippines. Now comes the answer: It’s a Holy Week attraction on ABS-CBN, and should get good viewership due to the pertinent significance of the season.
To complete the picture, producer Mark Burnett’s film production, “Son of God,” is currently playing in local cineplexes. How’s that for a one-two spiritual whammy? It’ll be interesting to see how Portuguese actor-model Diogo Morgado fares as Jesus Christ in both productions. —Will it be a case of overexposure for him?
Drastic transition
Other Lenten productions on TV include “moral lesson-oriented” religious dramas featuring noontime variety show hosts who are better known for making viewers giddily laugh than feelingly cry!
The sticking point in their case is how well they can make the drastic transition—or end up with “trying-hard” egg on their instantly pious faces!
Nasty way to go
Why should Miley Cyrus have all the fun and get all of the career-boosting “scandalous” mileage? A recent music video by Justin Bieber has him similarly sexing it up and locking lips and limbs with a number of hot chicks. —So much for the boy-next-door image that first propelled him to global stardom—going “grunge” and nasty now appears to be the way to go!
New ‘Tonight’ show host
Jimmy Fallon’s new “Tonight” show is officially a hit, and local viewers who want to sample the talk-variety show for themselves can find it showing weekdays at 1 p.m. on the My Movie channel.
We caught the show last week and saw that it was cannily building up a strong viewership by lining up big stellar guests, like Anne Hathaway and Kevin Costner.
The particular telecast we caught featured interviews with Bill O’Reilly, who was promoting his new book, “The Last Days of Jesus Christ,” and movie actor Anthony Mackie, who was plugging “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” where he was cast as Falcon.
Mackie boasted that the movie’s huge success has made him the first black superstar in Hollywood”—and nobody dared to contradict him!
More screen time
On the ABS-CBN noontime program, “Showtime,” Anne Curtis’ hospital leave and Karylle’s honeymoon have given Colleen Garcia more screen time to come into her own as a cohost. It’s striking how much like a mini-Anne she “projects,” so we wish that she would find something unique about herself to “push.”
What happens when both Anne and Karylle rejoin the show? Will it be back to “background” duty for Colleen? We certainly hope not! Now is the time for her to prove that she has her own contributions to make to the already successful production.
