Singaporean filmmaker’s ‘Iloilo’ inspired by childhood memories

Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen’s Cannes-winning film “Iloilo” was partly inspired by his childhood memories, particularly of growing up under the care of Filipino nanny Auntie Terry or Teresita Sajonia.

Now, there is talk that Auntie Terry, who is played by actress Angeli Bayani in the movie, will soon be reunited with the director.

“My family and I are completely overwhelmed by the goodwill coming from … the Philippines. It has been an emotional day for us. I am touched that she still kept so many photos of her time with us,” said Chen.

“It has been 16 years since she left …  and we are looking forward to getting in touch soon,” he said.

“Iloilo,” an entry in the Directors’ Fortnight, won the Camera D’Or at the Cannes fest. Bayani San Diego Jr.
