Vincent Sandoval’s “Aparisyon” will compete at the 15th Deauville Asian Film Festival in France from March 6 to 10. The drama film is vying for the Golden Lotus or best picture honor. The fest website has cited it for “its profound reflection on sin, guilt, faith—rooted in a specific historical and political context, highlighted by a sophisticated mise-en-scène.” It opens in local theaters on March 13. The beginning of our Cinemalaya movie marathon this year was far from auspicious. Last Saturday, at Greenbelt, the first two screenings we attended (Loy Arcenas’ “Requieme” and Mes de Guzman’s “Diablo”) stopped after 20 minutes, so we decided to refund our ticket for the third title on our list, because we didn’t want to risk another annoying no-show —which was a pity, because both films began exceedingly well.
