Viewers’ fascination with celebrities’ excesses probably all began with the ’80s TV show, “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.” But, that showcase for excess was positively bland when compared to its more recent fictionalized version, “Desperate Housewives.” That, in turn, has been trounced by its “reality TV” progeny, like “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.”

Last Jan. 29, we made it a point to catch two new shows on TV5, because their formats were rather unique, and even idiosyncratic. First, at 10 a.m., we watched “Alabang Housewives.” Initially, we thought it was a local version of the “Real Housewives of…” reality shows that have become so popular in the States.

ON US TV, “reality” shows rule. Producers like them because they’re relatively inexpensive to produce, and viewers dote on them because they share glimpses of how people, especially celebrities, live, behave and misbehave, so their appeal to “electronic Peeping Toms” is acute.
