WATCH: ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ trailer takes kids on time-warping journey
Fans of the novel “A Wrinkle in Time” need not travel through a wormhole: the science fiction-fantasy children’s classic finally has its first trailer for its big screen debut.
Madeline L’Engle’s 1963 novel takes social outcast Meg Murry (Storm Reid), her five-year-old genius brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) and schoolmate Calvin O’Keefe (Levi Miller) through time and space, to save the Murry’s scientist father Dr. Jack Murry (Chris Pine) from “a darkness.”

The trailer was first previewed at Disney’s fan convention, the D23 Expo.
The film is top-billed by Hollywood heavyweights Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon, and also stars popular comedian Mindy Kaling. Their characters guide the children through their time-warping journey and are interpreted in brilliant, otherworldly costumes.
Director Ava DuVernay has told Entertainment Weekly that three women of different ages, ethnicities, and body types were deliberately chosen to “reflect a fuller breadth of femininity” while their costumes are intended to reflect their culture and history.
“A Wrinkle in Time”, published in 1963, has been hailed as a classic for tackling concepts such as time travel, social conformity and good and evil, all within the scope of a children’s book.
While Walt Disney Pictures is producing this ambitious feature film iteration, Disney’s TV adaptation of the novel in 2003 received generally negative reviews.
Nevertheless, the new big screen film is also breaking ground in other ways: Ava DuVernay is reportedly the first black woman to direct a film with a budget of over $100 million.
The release date is expected to be on March 2018. JB
