Self-centered hosts irritate viewers

/ 12:33 AM August 20, 2016

Remember when some TV program hosts were so self-centered that they used to un-make our viewing day? A daytime host would drive us up the wall by constantly name-dropping about her friends, contacts, product endorsements, “sosyal” neighbors and possessions, etc.

Even when the focus of the conversation wasn’t on her and her family, she would interject self-serving comments like, “Oh, I have one just like that,”  “Oh, I have the newer version,” “Oh, I stayed there last year,” “Oh, my son has the compete set!”—etc. —Didn’t that get your goatherd?

And, weren’t you relieved when the namedropping host and other self-centered talents like her were no longer regularly seen on-cam?

Alas, the respite hasn’t lasted. All too soon, similarly self-absorbed TV hosts have taken their place, with even less agreeable results.

FEATURED STORIES

At least, the egoistic and egotistic originals had more “K” in the sosyal department, while their current replacements are decidedly less blue-blooded and blue-chip.

Pacing the current crop of “selfie” exponents on TV is a host who insists on slanting each and every conversation to relate to her small world of involvements, so she can comment on it—to her advantage.

For instance, she recently made a big deal out of a guest’s offhand remark about her mother’s rule to not laugh out loud, mouth open, because it wasn’t socially chic. The program host, who has infamously snaggly teeth, wailed that it would be impossible for her to follow that rule.

Irrelevant ‘complaint’

The guest looked askance at her, probably wondering how and why she had come into the picture—then archly dismissed her irrelevant “complaint” by pointing out that she could or should go in for complete dental reconstruction and surgery! —Touche.

A male counterpart who also turns viewers off cohosts a biz-oriented program, and irritates viewers with his endless references to all of the stars and starlets he’s “close” to.

His show is supposed to be all about show biz events and gossip, but it actually contains very little news and chismis, and instead wastes precious time with numerous birthday greetings, namedropping and product-endorsing patter, etc.

Worst of all, many of the people the host glowingly talks about aren’t even celebrities—just obscurely rich people he’s rubbed elbows with, who ply him with gifts and other freebies to do PR work for them.

Viewers are irked, because they’re not getting the show biz news and gossip they crave— while the coopted cohost is making additional hay by wasting their time!
