Single Review: ‘Ikot-Ikot’ by Sarah Geronimo

Sarah Geronimo

“Ikot-Ikot” is the lead single from Sarah Geronimo’s latest studio-release “Expressions”.

After the intro with the keyboards, I could then hear drum loops in the first verse from the drum programming and a few EDM elements added to it. I also noticed a faint touch of a bass line that would peak out every now and then in certain sections of the song.

The pre-recorded overlapping vocals of Sarah in the chorus section help heighten the emotions conveyed in “Ikot-Ikot”. Sarah’s voice in this single hasn’t gone through any unnecessary tweaking in the recording studio as it doesn’t have that squeaky aesthetic feel to it. It is really mostly her natural sounding singing voice that we get to hear. Plus, Sarah delivers her vocals with a sense of urgency that matches the upbeat pace of “Ikot-Ikot”.

What is the overall meaning of this single?

My own interpretation is that she is going through another crossroads and she is letting her thoughts—in this phase of her life now—be known more this time. I think Sarah at 25-years old is starting to feel a bit tired of the redundancy of things that involves her wanting to maintain her personal life truly private and compartmentalized, and be kept apart from her professional singing career. And I believe her own desire for more privacy is being addressed significantly in her lead single “Ikot-Ikot”.

Sarah is still one of the younger singers we have around and because of her age, people sometimes forget that she has been in the industry for more than 10 years already. We can even say, for more than a decade, when you count the years she had spent as an aspiring singer when she was joining amateur singing competitions and performing anywhere she could in the hope of being discovered. Then, you could say she has been doing this practically her whole life already.

I, for one, believe Sarah has kept her professional career in the straight and narrow, thanks largely to the guidance she has received from her parents. Thus, there have not been any real major controversies around her.

I think what upsets her detractors the most isn’t her wholesome public image or that she isn’t “daring” enough in their eyes. They are just mudding the real issue here—and that is—their own insecurities they themselves have had towards her all these years!

Time and time again, it has been proven that someone’s success will always breed envy and jealousy in others—for those who are plagued with a knee-jerk crab mentality who feel their day is not complete until they have not stirred up controversy or have not spread false rumors about their “person of interest.”

But I think Sarah Geronimo knows real well by now how to handle that other side of fame!

Going back to the single “Ikot-Ikot”. It is an excellent choice to be the lead single from her latest studio-release “Expressions”. Why? Because, first of all, it isn’t boring to listen to. Plus, most of her fans can somehow relate to the song and can find something in their own lives to connect to it.

We can credit this to the fact that Sarah herself was responsible for the concept of “Ikot-Ikot”.
