Christoph Waltz wins 2nd best supporting actor award

MANILA, Philippines— Christoph Waltz, the Austrian-German actor who successfully broke into Hollywood in recent years, has won his 2nd best supporting actor award on Sunday’s Oscars (Monday in Manila).

In the ongoing Academy Awards, Waltz won for his role as a German bounty hunter in Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained”.

His first best supporting actor award was also a Tarantino-directed film in 2009, “Inglourious Basterds” in which he played a ruthless Nazi officer-murderer.

Tarantino said in various interviews that he wrote the script of “Django Unchained” with Waltz in mind for the bounty hunter character.

“He could deliver my lines like poetry,” Tarantino said.

At the Dolby Theater where the event is taking place, Philippine Daily Inquirer entertainment columnist Ruben Nepales asked Waltz why Tarantino brought him another Oscar.

“He writes poetry and I like poetry,” Waltz told Nepales.

Earlier, Pixar and Disney’s collaborative 2012 output “Brave” was awarded “Best Animated Feature Film”.  Disney’s black-and-white “Paperman” was given “Best Short Animated Film.”

Best Cinematography went to Claudio Miranda for “Life of Pi,” which also got the “Best Visual Effects” award.
