Drag queen Marina Summers gave a pointed reminder to Filipinos about setting standards for electing officials of the country at the same level as choosing beauty queens, as she made history as the first transwoman to host Miss Universe Philippines 2026.

Summers struck a mix of wit and candor as she opened the Miss Universe Philippines 2026 coronation night on Saturday, May 2, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“Welcome to the most talked-about event in Philippine pageantry. I understand how important this evening is for the people here at the arena and, of course, the people watching at home,” she said.

The drag superstar then went on to note that Filipinos should uphold the same standards in electing leaders as they do in judging beauty queens.

“The stakes are high and everybody is understandably invested in this pageant,” she continued. “Let’s just hope that we have the same standards when we elect our country’s future leaders. Tama, mali?”

Summers’ hosting stint is historic, as she officially became the first transwoman to host a national pageant. She previously performed in the opening number of the 2024 edition of Miss Universe Philippines.

The delegates are now down to the Top 15, all vying to succeed reigning queen Ahtisa Manalo and represent the Philippines at Miss Universe 2026 later this year. /edv
