Musical drama ‘Songs for Selina’ gets R-18 rating from MTRCB

“Songs for Selina,” a Filipino musical drama has been given an R-18 rating by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) after it was found to have mature themes through music and drama.
The film stars Rachel Alejandro, Mica Javier, Jay R and Rachel Coates. An R-18 rating means the film is for adults only and may contain strong themes, language, violence, sex, nudity, horror or drug use not suitable for viewers below 18.
Also in the movie are Audie Gemora, Nicole Laurel, Leanne Mamonong, and Gian Magdangal.
Produced by Jay-R’s Homeworkz Entertainment, “Songs For Selina” tells the story of aspiring artists Selina (Mica Javier) and Maya (Rachel Coates) who become disillusioned with the painful realities of the music industry. Their pursuit of their dreams to become a singer leads to the breakdown of their close friendship.
Jay-R previously spoke about “Songs for Selina,” saying it was a deeply personal film for him, as it revolves around lived realities among artists and the unspoken truths within the industry.
The movie is set to premiere in Philippine cinemas on March 18.
Aside from “Songs for Selina,” the MTRCB also gave its ratings to other Filipino and international film entries:
- “The Graduation Day,” starring Jeric Gonzales, Elizabeth Oropesa and Simon Ibarra, which received a PG (Parental Guidance) rating;
- “Project Hail Mary,” led by Ryan Gosling, which was rated PG for its action-driven narrative;
- Biographical sports drama “Giant,” starring Pierce Brosnan and Amir El-Masry, also rated PG;
- Anime title “Gintama on Theatre 2D: Shinsen-Gumi Doukan Arc” was given a PG rating
- Horror film “Mudborn,” featuring Cecilia Choi and Yo Yang gets R-16 due to “disturbing scenes and intense imagery”;
- “Mortuary Assistant,” another horror film, starring Willa Holland, is also classified R-16.
- “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” a horror-comedy starring Shawn Hatosy, Samara Weaving and Sarah Michelle Gellar, which received an R-16 rating for violence, suspense and dark humor.
A PG rating means the film may include some mature elements but is generally suitable for younger viewers with guidance from parents or adults. An R-16 rating, on the other hand, means the film may contain stronger themes, violence or disturbing content not suitable for viewers below 16.
For special screenings from March 20 to 22, cinemas will show the extended edition of “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” starring Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler and Orlando Bloom. The film was classified PG for sequences of fantasy violence. /edv
