“Songs For Selina” — a musical film produced by Jay-R’s Homeworkz Entertainment — is set to premiere in Philippine cinemas on March 18.

The film tells the story of Selina (Mica Javier) and Maya (Rachel Coates), who become disillusioned with the painful realities of the music industry. They initially had dreams of becoming artists; however, pursuing those dreams led to the breakdown of their close friendship.

According to Jay-R, “Songs For Selina” is a deeply personal film for him, as it revolves around lived realities among artists and the unspoken truths within the industry.

“It draws from our own lived experiences, the stories of our peers, and the unspoken truths that quietly exist within the industry,” he said. “As artists ourselves, we understand the fear of being marginalized or blacklisted for addressing uncomfortable truths, especially in systems where power is unevenly distributed. That vulnerability is precisely why we chose to tell this story through film and music.”

The singer-songwriter added that “independent storytelling” is the way to narrate artists’ shared experiences, noting that “major studios and networks” are not the only platforms for sharing their stories.

“Major studios and networks are not the only path. There is a space for us, and it’s time we collectively step into it — to strengthen, diversify, and elevate the state of our entertainment industry,” he said.

The film also stars Jay-R himself, along with Rachel Alejandro, Audie Gemora, Nicole Laurel, Leanne Mamonong, and Gian Magdangal.

“Songs For Selina” was first released on Prime Video and Tubi in North America in June 2025. It will be released through Black Cap Pictures in the Philippines. /edv
