Kim Atienza’s response to Robin Padilla’s remarks about ‘weak kids’: ‘Kindness’

(Trigger warning: mentions of suicide and depression)
Kim Atienza has responded to remarks made by Sen. Robin Padilla that today’s youth is “weak” amid discussions on mental health and rising suicide cases.
In an Instagram post on Thursday, Feb. 12, Atienza called for “a little kindness (and understanding)” following Padilla’s comments during a Senate hearing on the proposed Children’s Safety in Social Media Act the day before.
While he did not directly criticize Padilla, Atienza emphasized the importance of support systems for those struggling.
“While views may differ on how depression is understood across generations, one thing is clear: support should always be available. That’s why we’ve put together a list of 24/7 crisis hotlines, because whether or not the word was used before, the need for help is real for many today,” the TV host captioned his post alongside a video of Padilla.
During the hearing, Padilla said depression was not a term commonly used in his generation and described today’s children as “weak.”

The actor-senator defended his stance, explaining that it came from studies as he cited a 2021 survey showing that nearly one in five (about 20%) Filipino youth aged 15 to 24 have thought about ending their lives.
“If you want to help address this issue concerning the youth, do something about it and stop talking about me. Act on the data, not on my statement,” said Padilla.
Atienza’s youngest daughter, Emman, died at age 19 last year. While the cause of death has not been disclosed, he has been open about her struggles with depression and attempts at self-harm in past interviews and social media posts.
Since his daughter’s death, the television host has publicly supported her late daughter’s advocacy, using his platform to raise awareness about mental health and the importance of seeking professional help. /ra
