A timeline of Julia Barretto, Gerald Anderson’s relationship

While speculations had already been circulating for the past few months, the breakup confirmation of Julia Barretto and Gerald Anderson still came as a shock to fans who were rooting for the couple to be the endgame. 

To look back, here’s a recap of the highs and lows of the actors’ relationship:

March 2019

Julia and Anderson were paired up for the first time in the romance-drama film “Between Maybes,” portraying the roles of two people who have lost control of their own lives and unexpectedly met while searching for themselves. 

“It’s a fresh new tandem. I don’t think it’s anything that anyone ever expected na magkakatambalan,” the actress said.

At the time, Anderson was with Bea Alonzo, although their relationship had been on the rocks. The following July, Alonzo said the actor had just started not talking to her.

Around the same time, Anderson was being linked to Julia after photos of them together at Rayver Cruz’s birthday party made rounds on social media.

August 2019

Anderson confirmed his breakup with Alonzo, stressing that there was no third party to blame.

Julia later issued a separate statement to respond to Alonzo’s cryptic post about betrayal. The younger actress said the latter’s post “put malice into the minds of many, which resulted in the outrage of insults against [her].”

“I believe Gerald has already made it clear that a third party was not the cause of their breakup. I would like to disassociate myself from the breakup of Bea and Gerald. Their issues are entirely their own,” Julia said.

November 2020

Julia admitted she was in love although she did not expound on the matter. Just two months later, the actress further hinted that she was in a relationship.

March 2021

Speculations of romance between Julia and Anderson persisted until the actor made the confirmation. In an interview with Boy Abunda, the TV host asked Anderson if he was “happy because of Julia,” to which the actor replied: “Very happy. Very happy, Tito Boy. It’s a yes.”

The two were then frequently seen spending time together on trips and public events, with Anderson also bonding with Julia’s family.

August 2021

Anderson declared he would like to marry Julia someday as he said she was “the one” for him.

“Pero dahil siguro she’s still very young and ang dami pa niyang mai-offer sa industriya natin and ang dami pa niyang ipapakita sa inyo, sa audience natin, ‘yung talent niya. So ayaw ko maging hadlang doon,” he said.

(But maybe because she’s still very young and still has a lot to offer to our industry, she still has so many things to show our audience, with her talent. So, I don’t want to get in the way of that.)

December 2021

Anderson made the holidays memorable as he gifted Julia with her first-ever Rolex watch. The couple also celebrated the occasion with the actress’ family.

“You’re still life’s greatest gift of all — my best friend, my number one, my home,” Julia told Anderson. “I will forever find comfort in your arms. Even when I’m 75, I will still need you most. I love you more than you can ever imagine.”

May 2022

Julia expressed her readiness to settle with Anderson, saying she was ready to give her “yes” if the actor proposed to her.

She also spoke about her willingness to have a child at her age, crediting her closeness to her mom Marjorie Barretto as one of the contributing factors.

“I think it also comes with my mom and I being the best of friends. That’s because our age difference is not so far apart,” Julia said. “It’s just we’re so close and I think I just want to have that kind of relationship with my children as well.”

October 2022

Anderson opened up at the time about his plans of settling down and revealed that he was ready to start the next chapter of his life “anytime soon.”

“Kung ano ‘yung sitwasyon namin ngayon, hindi ko alam kung mahihigitan pa namin dahil napakaganda ng sitwasyon naming dalawa ngayon,” he said of his relationship with Julia.

(I don’t think we will be able to have a better situation than what we have now, because we currently have a very good relationship.)

September 2023

Julia and Anderson were hounded with marriage speculations, but the actress dismissed these.

“Sobrang excited [niyo]. Bakit niyo ba kami minamadali?” she jokingly said. “You know, we’re just really happy where we are in life. It’s something to look forward to, pero bakit niyo ba kami minamadali?”

(You’re all so excited. Why are you rushing us? … It’s something to look forward to, but why are you rushing us to get married?)

March 2024

Julia and Alonzo reconciled and were spotted hugging and laughing together at the tribute party for showbiz star-maker Johnny Manahan. Anderson was among those who celebrated the incident, underscoring how “time heals.”

September 2024

Anderson reiterated that Julia was the right one for him, but he clarified that they were not planning to tie the knot at the time as he wanted her to enjoy her single life first.

“Five years na kami. But itong moment na ‘to, ‘yung moment niya ngayon, let her enjoy. Huwag nating madaliin,” he said. (We’ve been together for five years. But her moment right now, let her enjoy. Let’s not rush things.)

June 2025

The pair had been a subject of breakup rumors but Anderson denied this and said they were okay. He even noted that his dad wanted Julia to be the actor’s endgame.

“There were many bumps in the road but I think they are all blessings because it made us even stronger. When you go through something like that and you see that your partner is emotionally strong, you know that it was worth it,” Anderson remarked.

Weeks later, Anderson publicly expressed his affection for Julia during his guest appearance on the noontime show “Eat Bulaga.”

September 2025

Breakup speculations continued hounding the pair along with claims linking Anderson to volleyball player Vanie Gandler. This was seemingly further fueled by Julia’s aunt Claudine Barretto, who threw shade at Gandler through an interview.

“Basta hindi na ako nanonood ng [Premier Volleyball League]. Siya (Gandler), ayoko nang makita. Wala naman akong galit sa bata. Hindi ko lang siya gusto, pwede naman ‘yon diba?” said Claudine.

(I don’t watch PVL anymore. I don’t want to see her anymore. I am not angry at the kid. I just don’t like her; that’s acceptable, right?) 

Days later, Julia and Anderson confirmed their separation through statements released by their respective talent management agencies Viva Artists Agency and Star Magic. /ra
