Piolo Pascual opened up about the secret to balancing his heartthrob image with his dedication to honing his craft, saying that “self-love” is at the core of his longevity and relevance. 

Recently announced as the new Philippine ambassador for an international apparel brand, Pascual reflected on his status as a heartthrob as he emphasized the importance of embracing both his looks and his talent, as well as being adaptable to change.

“Self-care, self-love, and always being open to change [is how I balance things]. Just being open for things that can make you grow as an actor. It’s also important to be aware of the times that are constantly changing, be able to adapt, and just make sure that everything that you do is interesting,” he told INQUIRER.net in an online interview.

As many actors struggle to maintain relevance over the years, Pascual remained a constant fixture in the industry, but even he acknowledges that the biggest challenge in staying relevant in show business is maintaining the interest of the audience.

“First of all, commitment to the craft is the most important thing, and being able to be open to evolution and not resting on your laurels is important, always looking for something that will challenge you and get you out of your comfort zone,” he stated.

“The biggest challenge is being able to make your audience interested in you, knowing that you can offer more and consciously trying to always be a chameleon by accepting roles that can challenge you. It comes with age—the challenge of being able to always give something new, something different,” added the actor.

When asked about his non-negotiable when you’re accepting roles or endorsements, the “The Kingdom” star stressed that it’s not about money.

“I have to believe in what I do; I have to know that I do something not just because of the money but because I know it’s going to make me and help me grow not just as a person but also as an artist,” he said.

“The Kingdom,” a movie starring Pascual and Vice Sotto, is one of the 10 Metro Manila Film Festival 2024 entries, which will premiere in Philippine cinemas on Dec. 25.
