Morissette Amon remained firm in protecting her job as a singer weeks after coming under fire for alleged “lackluster performance” and “attitude problems,” as she reminded to speak up on important matters.

Amon drew backlash after event director Vic Sevilla claimed in a now-deleted Facebook post that a certain “phoenix” had a subpar performance which was a “waste of time and money,” among other allegations. This prompted the singer to clarify that she was sick when the aforementioned performance took place.

Weeks later, Amon told reporters on the Billboard Philippines Women in Music blue carpet that her post was meant to “protect [her] work” as an artist since she did her job despite the circumstances.

“I’m trying to protect my work at naglabas din ng resibo ang asawa ko (and my husband showed proof). I’m just doing my work to try to deliver and sing… Walang nakarating sa’kin (nothing came to me) personally but I don’t mind. It happens.”

Without mentioning Sevilla’s name, the singer said he “apologized” and reached out to her personally. She also pointed out that it’s “fair” to settle issues publicly when others throw accusations against them in public.

“‘Yung talent coordinator, nag-apologize naman and mismong nag-contact. So nag-apologize naman,” she said. (The talent coordinator apologized and contacted me personally. So he apologized.)

“If someone posts an issue publicly, I guess it’s fair to try to settle it publicly. They could’ve settled it privately but they didn’t go that route which, unfortunately, stained my image,” Amon further added.

The incident made Amon realize the value of “speaking up,” citing the “accessibility” of social media, especially when one’s core values and image are at stake.

“I think it’s important, especially now, with the internet being very accessible to speak up on important matters, especially when it comes to your core values,” she said.

Amon also admitted the rumors hurt her “for a while,” but stressed that there are moments when people wouldn’t “understand the full story.”

“What can we do? People think we would get used to it for a while but it comes day to day and we’re just trying to get by,” she said. “Nagkakasakit tayo but people don’t understand the full story. I decided to speak up kasi lumalaki na siya. Dati, you can just shrug it off and then it’s gone. But ang dami nang naniniwala.”

Amon, who hinted she will release Visayan music in the coming days, bagged the People’s Choice award at the ceremony last March 22 in Taguig.
