PH celebrities: Justice for flight attendant’s death

MANILA, Philippines — Some of the biggest names in Philippine showbusiness have demanded justice for the death of flight attendant Christine Angela Dacera.

Dacera, 23, was found unconscious in a bathtub of a hotel in Makati City after a reported New Year’s Eve party. She was later pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.

“Have a safe flight to heaven Christine. We will make sure that you get the justice you deserve,” Kapuso actress Jennylyn Mercado on Tuesday tweeted. “The whole truth will come out.”

In a subsequent tweet, Mercado also called on the public to stop victim-blaming.

“Every time you blame the victim, you take the side of the rapist,” she said.

TV host Bianca Gonzalez, meanwhile, said that “rape happens because of rapists, not because anyone ‘asked for it’.”

“We would prefer your respect over your protection. We’re not pretty things that need constant guarding. We’re human beings.” so said Frankie Pangilinan, who in the past has been vocal about “denormalizing” rape culture.

“Christine Dacera shouldn’t have needed protection. enough of that dialogue. She was a woman who deserved basic, human decency,” she later added.

As for Janus del Prado, a short yet powerful message on Instagram: “Don’t rape.”

The chief of the Makati City police, Col. Harold Depositar, said the victim “had lacerations and sperm in her genitalia,” as well as bruises, contusions, and scratches on her arms and legs.

A provisional charge of rape with homicide was filed Monday against 11 persons who were with Dacera during the party, Depositar added.
