CONSTRUCTION of the historic church began in 1830—and went on for 53 years!
THE moss-draped interiors of St. John the Baptist Church in Bato, Catanduanes, Bicol, is a sight to behold. Built in 1883, the church has special significance for Pagcor president, Jorge Sarmiento, because he was baptized there.
Beginning in 1830, construction of the church went on for 53 years. The second largest church in Bicol has withstood wars, calamities and the ravages of time.
Legendary bell
Today, the church brings back memories of old times when, in the spirit of bayanihan, its parishioners’ forefathers toiled to build its massive walls and magnificent facade. In its tower hangs the legendary bell that once warned residents about invading Japanese soldiers.
Seen from the other side of a river, the old structure looks majestic and imposing. It’s a must-see for devotees and tourists!
