A new singing star is born

Davon Fleming

As of this writing (Dec. 5), “The Voice” has yet to pick its winner. But, the search is over as far as this viewer is concerned, because Davon Fleming (Team Jennifer) has just come up with a performance of a Whitney Houston number that definitively proves that a “woman’s song” can be interpreted to perfection by a male singer.

It was so good that it had “winner” written all over it, even if Fleming is just one of the singing tilt’s 10 finalists at this stage.

Even if he doesn’t “officially” win the title, his memorable performance has already made him a certified star, and many viewers who were moved by his interpretation will support his stellar career from here on in.

FEATURED STORIES

Fleming bowled us and many other viewers over with his rendition of the song, “I Am Changing,” from the musical, “Dreamgirls,” originally sung by Billie Holiday, and revived by Jennifer Hudson.

It’s a “killer” song even for female belters, so you can imagine the “incredulous” thrill that Fleming generated when he “dared” to sing it on “The Voice”—without having to “go falsetto!”

Only a few guys have a vocal range that wide and high, so Fleming should thank his lucky stars and genes that he’s singularly blessed. Bravissimo!

‘Caught on Camera’

Another winner on the tube is AXN’s video compilation show, “Caught on Camera.”

Hosted by Nick Cannon, the new program invites submissions from professional and amateur video director-producers, with a decided preference for the odd, unusual or “crazy” short feature or visual stunt.

This is a “kooky” concept that could go awry very quickly—but, judicious vetting of accepted submissions has enabled the show to avoid that obvious pitfall.

We like this show so much that we watch it fairly regularly.

Among its features that we have particularly enjoyed viewing is the video submitted by a teenage Fil-Am girl that shows her doing a trendy dance montage—with her father!

The “old” guy feistily kept up with his frisky daughter, to viewers’ disarmed delight.

Another impressive and unusual video showcased the unusual tricks performed by a young man who had the exceptionally accurate ability to “shoot” an object into any available receptacle or goal.

Most people do this with basketballs and hoops, but the unconventional shooter had a much more varied repertoire of tricks.

He could uncannily shoot a bottle of peanut butter onto a far-off shelf, sliced bread into a toaster, medical pills into a teensy-weensy cup—etc.!

Similarly unusual and compellingly viewable were videos that showed a family being rescued from a blazing trailer home on a highway; a man sucked into a jet engine’s intake; a store owner fighting off a stick-up artist; a trial where a man faked a heart attack—and cute and clever pets showing off their fancy dance moves and “talking” and “singing” talents—galore!
