PH docus in Munich
Two Filipino documentaries are in the lineup of the 32nd International Documentary Film Festival Munich, which ends today in Bavaria, Germany. Baby Ruth Villarama’s “Sunday Beauty Queen” and Ramona Diaz’s “Motherland (Bayan Ina Mo)” are among the 157 films from 45 countries that have been selected as part of the two-week event.
According to its website, the fest “highlights socially relevant and artistically valuable” docus.
The site relates that Villarama’s docu, best picture winner at last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival, presents “a beauty competition [of Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong] … in a whole new light.”
Meanwhile, Diaz’s film allows viewers to “gain intimate insights into Filipino society… amid the orderly chaos of mothers, babies, nurses and relatives” at the Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila, which has the distinction of having “one of the highest [hospital] birth rates in the world.”—BAYANI SAN DIEGO JR.
