FLYNN. Portrayed John Barrymore in “Too Much, Too Soon.”

One of Hollywood’s most exciting stars during the film capital’s  Golden era was Errol Flynn. He appeared in such epics as “Robin Hood,” “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” “The Prince and the Pauper” and “Captain Blood,” which also starred Olivia de Havilland. While his leading lady took her job seriously, the easygoing actor made light of his popularity.

It is said that the actor courted De Havilland throughout their many years as costars, but she was wary of his recklessness. Despite the fact that he never took acting seriously, he was nonetheless a fine actor, especially toward the end of his career, in such films as “The Sun Also Rises” and “Too Much, Too Soon,” in which he portrayed the Great Profile, John Barrymore, who had bouts with alcoholism and drug dependence.

Flynn was discovered in an Australian version of “In the Wake of the Bounty.” He was supposed to have irked “serious” actors, like Bette Davis, who portrayed Elizabeth I in “Elizabeth and Essex.” In one scene, Flynn ate onions to make his breath unbearable for the Academy Award-winning actress. However, their onscreen rapport was scorching!
