The sci-fi film that warns about the dangers of technology and social media has released its trailer featuring Emma Watson,Tom Hanks and John Boyega.

“The Circle” is based on Dave Eggers’ 2013 groundbreaking novel and set in San Francisco’s Silicon Valley, a sanctuary of many of the world’s giant tech companies. The story circles around Mae Holland (Watson), a fresh graduate who quests after employment in the revolutionary internet giant The Circle, which is headed by a Steve Jobs-like CEO, Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks). The company developed cutting-edge technological products including SeeChange, a portable webcam that offers real-time videos to anyone.  Its founders slowly unmasked the employees’ ambitious dream of mutating the world into a surveillance state.

“There needs to be accountability,” Bailey reminds his employees in the trailer. “Knowing is good, but knowing everything is better.”

Soon, Holland climbs the corporate ladder and becomes a thriving “rockstar” in The Circle. The film highlights her love interests such as co-worker Kalden (John Boyega) and ex-boyfriend Mercer, who would suffer a tragic fate. They venture on a mission to save the online universe from the hands of tech oligarchs.

“The Circle” will shake movie houses on April 28, 2017.  Gianna Francesca Catolico
