Time was when most TV shows strove to interest and excite the greatest number of viewers as possible. This “least common denominator” view of programming resulted in generally predictable shows that promised “something for everyone,” and were thus as generic and bland as the competition.
These days, however, with the viewing audience so huge, more TV producers go for “niche” programming—which is calibrated to appeal to the specific needs and preferences of just one sector of the mass TV viewership.

On TV these days, to cite just one program type, there are all sorts of shows about cooking and cuisine.
