Playwright Eve Ensler is in the country to grace the One Billion Rising dance revolution and campaign (to end violence against women) in Rizal Park on Feb. 14. “The Vagina Monologues” author is railing against the inability of the Philippine government to demand justice for comfort women. Reacting to the plight of 85-year-old Lola Narcisa Claveria, one of the 174 comfort women of Lila Pilipina who want the Japanese government held accountable for “rape, sexual slavery and crimes against humanity,” Eve says, “It’s a shame that this government has not made it right with the comfort women. I met Lola Narcisa 15 years ago. How is it possible that we’re still sitting here without justice for her and the other comfort women? When I hear the way migrant workers and children are being sold out, it goes all the way back to the comfort women—because that was the first sell-out. It’s a national shame—and it’s on the Philippine government! Everybody in this country should be rising with us to make sure that Lola Narcisa’s day of justice comes.” Rito P. Asilo
