Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza have ignited something truly magical in local television history to which every Filipino from around the world can relate and connect. Almost everyone knows that our country has a soft spot for anything remotely romantic, hence the current AlDub phenomenon.

The accidental pairing of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza is, for me, one of the best examples of “love” found in the most unlikely places. Maine Mendoza’s impulsive and simple wave (as a fan) to Alden Richards—whom she noticed was watching her segment on the monitor in Broadway Centrum and Alden’s own amused and momentary uncertain reaction to her wave—and he waving back to her was the clincher that vicariously thrilled the viewers and tickled their imagination for a possible romantic tie-up between them.

That simple wave has quite accidentally “rewritten”—in a helter-skelter way— this “KalyeSserye” (as coined by Joey de Leon) and which is developing and now unfolding into a “love story” from what was to be a comical skit about a “Lola and her Yaya.”

FEATURED STORIES

The music used, lip-synched by Alden and Maine (now popularly known as AlDub), and heard in this “KalyeSerye” is culled mostly from old and new local and foreign love songs. A few of them have in fact become staples for the AlDub ” KalyeSerye” such that they are quickly associated by fans worldwide to the AlDub phenomenon.

Being quite familiar by now with the development of the “AlDub Love Story,” I would have my own choices of songs for it—songs with lyrics fitting and seemingly tailor-made for Alden and Maine.

To think about the girl you love
And hold her tight, so happy together

If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine
So happy together.”

– lyrics taken from the first verse of “Happy Together” by The Turtles.

2) “I Can’t Help Myself” (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) by The Four Tops –

“Sugar pie honey bunch
I’m weaker than a man should be
I can’t help myself
I’m a fool in love you see
Want to tell you I don’t love you
Tell you that we’re through
And I’ve tried
But every time I see your face
I get up all choked up inside

When I call your name, girl
It starts the flame burning in my heart
Tearin’ it all apart
No matter how I try.”
My love I cannot hide – some of the lyrics of “I Can’t Help Myself” (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) by The Four Tops.

3) “A Groovy Kind of Love” by The Mindbenders –

“When I’m feeling blue, all I have to do Is take a look at you, then I’m not so blue
When you’re close to me, I can feel your heart beat
I can hear you breathing near my ear
Wouldn’t you agree, baby you and me got a groovy kind of love.” – some of the lyrics of “A Groovy Kind of Love” from The Mindbenders.
