‘Questionable’ awards scored
Raffy Tugado, bank employee: “I don’t understand why there are so many local groups handing out awards for film excellence. Time was when there were only a few of them, like the Famas, Catholic Mass Media Awards and Urian. Now, we also have those coming from the Film Academy of the Philippines, Young Critics Circle, Star Awards, Entertainment Press, Pasado, Gawad Tanglaw and more.
“It’s hard to tell which among them is the most credible! Needless to say, the prestige of these awards has been diminished because of some questionable results.”
Other notes:
Alicia Raagas, housewife: “I love listening to classic OPM tunes and, thanks to YouTube, I can still listen to Pilita Corrales, one of my favorite singers. Her songs always put a smile on my face, like George Sison’s ‘What Name Shall I Give You, My Love?’ and her signature hit, ‘A Million Thanks To You.’
“Today’s female singers should listen to her and realize that there’s more to singing than birit.”
Jonathan Catunao, engineer: “The prestige of the National Artist award can only be matched by the controversies surrounding it. Its appeal is such that unconfirmed reports about a new batch of awardees, including some questionable choices, is causing a minitectonic quake in cyberspace.
