Alfonso Cuaron wins best director Globe for ‘Gravity’
LOS ANGELES—Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron won best director Golden Globe on Sunday for spectacular 3D space drama “Gravity,” starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.
Cuaron beat Paul Greengrass (“Captain Phillips”), Steve McQueen (“12 Years A Slave”), Alexander Payne (“Nebraska”) and David O. Russell (“American Hustle”) to take the coveted prize at the 71st annual Golden Globes.
“This is for the hundreds of people that made this film possible — and because of my thick accent, they ended up doing what they thought I said, not what I really said,” Cuaron said.
Prior to “Gravity,” the director was best known for the Oscar-nominated Mexican road movie “Y Tu Mama Tambien” and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
“Gravity” was among this year’s nominees for best drama motion picture, a laurel that went to “12 Years a Slave.”
