Making all the right moves

The MTRCB under chair Atty. Toto Villareal has been making all the right moves of late, winning plaudits for its efforts to protect young viewers. Most recently, the MTRCB cautioned “Bubble Gang” to tone down comedy scenes that tend to degrade women.

What’s good about the MTRCB’s moves is their penchant for treating erring TV people as partners rather than “enemies,” with give-and-take discussions the order of the day.

After all, there are some TV workers who care not only about top ratings but also for enabling young viewers to watch positive rather than negative TV images.

For their part, parents should decide to take a more proactive stance in relation to what their small kids watch on TV.

They can start a discussion of the obvious and hidden values that some shows project, and teach their kids to be more selective about what they are viewing.

With more research, parents will be able to discover quite a lot of responsibly produced programs that will do their kids a lot of good, especially in the areas of science and the arts.

The MTRCB and AnakTV could help in this regard by more clearly identifying those responsibly produced programs, and thus take a lot of the guesswork out of concerned parents and educators’ essential task to protect their vulnerable wards from irresponsible and potentially harmful TV!
