Big brother’s special day

NAVASERO. Anything is possible.

Today, I pay tribute to the second oldest among my six brothers. At age 11, Hector Navasero was a guerrilla courier in our hometown of Los Baños, Laguna. He would hide grenades underneath baskets full of vegetables, fruits and fish. He grew up believing that anything was possible.

He attended UPLB as a scholar and graduated in 1958 with a degree in Agriculture. He married Chemistry professor, Sylvia Rodriguez Arnaldo, with whom he has three sons, Bambi, Tinky and Pierre.

Kuya Hector is a businessman and a sportsman—he is the president of the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association.

Pioneer

Like sports, he says, “the essential thing in life isn’t conquering, but fighting well.” My brother keeps himself sharp by attending scientific conferences abroad. His company, Philab, is a pioneer in its field.

When my younger brother, Gary, passed away,  Kuya Hector took care of his family and sent Gary’s seven children to school. When I attended the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, he gave me a scholarship—and a brand new car!

Philab has expanded into furniture-selling. Check out its showroom at 7487 Bagtikan st., Makati City, or call 890-8277 or 895-5422.

Kuya Hector will celebrate his birthday on June 18. Happy birthday, Sugar Brother—and Happy Father’s Day, too!
