SANTOS. There’s more to singing than sheer lung power.
Federico Jaucian, researcher: “I watched GMA 7’s political telenovela, ‘Bayan Ko,’ with growing interest, and was so impressed with how it was able to dramatize current issues with believable plotting.
“The show proves that ‘heavy’ and technical subjects can also be made viewable. I wish there’d be more shows like ‘Bayan Ko,’—well-directed and -acted, and with a significant message for viewers!”

“Noli de Castro sounds like the ringmaster of a circus whenever he breaks for the next segment with his ‘teybeeepatrolll’ spiel. Ted Failon sounds like an overacting voice talent as he editorializes with gusto.
“Mike Enriquez is the national motor mouth. Does he have to speak so fast? And Mel Tiangco initially sounds high pitched and squeaky, then slides to old-school modulation. —What’s wrong with just reporting the news without embellishments?”
Yuki Tagnipez Sacurom, fashion designer: “I rarely watch Sunday musical-variety shows. Last time I did, I switched off my TV set, because I didn’t want to listen to young upstarts singing sintunado!
“Last Sunday, I had the misfortune of tuning in to ‘Party Pilipinas,’ in particular a segment featuring OPM tunes sung by its female mainstays. Some did pass muster, notably Aicelle Santos, but the others were trying to out-birit each other.
“Maricris Garcia struggled with the high notes, along with Rachelle Ann Go. Their handlers should tell them to please relax. Even Jaya had her share of false notes. They should realize that there’s more to singing than sheer lung power!”
Wayne Mendez, student: “It’s puzzling why we have too many award-giving bodies for movies! To make matters worse, they often come up with different sets of questionable winners! Can somebody tell me which of them are credible?”
