Janelle Manahan on putting a horrific incident behind her: “After the shooting (which resulted in the death of her boyfriend Ramgen Revilla and which almost left her disfigured), I used to break down when anyone so much as mentioned his name. But I’ve come to accept that I cannot change what happened. I intend to fulfill a promise that I made to him and to myself, that I would tell the truth, no matter the outcome. And then I would get on with my life—I’ve started this process, in fact, knowing he would like nothing less for me. I wasn’t scared to ask for a mirror even before I could speak after that night. I am less scared now.”
