I’m currently reading a book by Ferdinand Llanes on the stories contributed by young activists during the martial law era. It’s called “Tibak Rising” with the word tibak being the slang for activist. This was a gift from my friend Joel Saracho, whom I’ve worked with in “I Heart You, Pare,” and now in “Pahiram ng Sandali.” I appreciated this because I wasn’t really into books and have always wanted to make reading and finishing a book my New Year’s resolution for so many years now. I find this book interesting because I want to learn about the views of the people who participated in the movement. I want to know their objectives, to compare them to the youth of today. I’m interested in knowing how (martial law) affected their lives, what changes were effected and what today’s youth can contribute to the community to make sure (human rights abuse) never happens again.
