There have been many incidents of suicide in Hollywood—Carole Landis, Lupe Velez, Margaret Sullavan and Judy Garland, who attempted suicide so many times that no one was surprised when she finally “succeeded.”
Also gone too soon were male celebrities like George Sanders, the enigmatic Charles Boyer, and comedian Freddie Prinze! You may well suspect that Jean Harlow, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and James Dean also had suicidal tendencies, because of the way they pushed themselves to the brink of disaster.
Harlow and Garland died before they got old like Elizabeth Taylor, who had a difficult time accepting roles beyond her “most beautiful face in the world” heyday.
Screen machos
Velez captivated the world as a spitfire. However, after she romanced screen machos who included Johnny Weissmuller, she ended up taking her life.
Carole Landis, who fashioned her name after her favorite actress, Carole Lombard, died after she appeared with Victor Mature in Hal Roach’s 1940 sci-fi adventure, “One Million B.C.”
It was reported that Charles Boyer was crushed by the sudden death of his favorite son. Even stranger was the reason given for George Sanders’ suicide—apparently, he got “bored with life,” so he ended it! The suicides of these celebrities prove that, sometimes, fame and fortune don’t guarantee happiness!
