World-class gay revue still packing ’em in

This snapshot is not from a Broadway show, though it may remind some musical theater enthusiasts of the boat ride amidst floating lamps scene in “Phantom of the Opera.” This is from “Bedazzled,” now in its 11th incarnation at the pioneering Club Mwah on Boni Avenue in Mandaluyong City.

Staged by Follies de Mwah, a troupe steered by intrepid partners Cris Nicolas and Pocholo Mallilin, “Bedazzle”—known to its fans for meticulously designed sets, intricate costumes and skillful impersonations—has been steadily attracting an audience of foreigners, homecoming Filipinos and loyal local followers for the past seven years.

This number—the troupe’s interpretation of “Be Italian,” from the movie “Nine”—stars Follies creative director Cris Nicolas and mainstay performer Chaka.—Emmie G. Velarde
