Phil Mangubat, media observer: “Without a doubt, ‘Walang Hanggan’ was very successful—but, its story should have respected viewers’ intelligence. It was a teleserye where protagonists and villains had to die and get resurrected repeatedly in a series of twists—with no rhyme nor reason.
“The current hit, ‘Ina, Kapatid, Anak,’ is instructive—and its young stars have a lot to learn from Janice de Belen, Cherry Pie Picache and Ariel Rivera.”
Other notes:
Kathlyn Sta. Maria, televiewer: “It’s disheartening to see how a TV commercial seems to perpetuate the regressive notion that the responsibility of ‘keeping house’ and preparing meals for the family rests solely on women.
“I thought we, Filipinos, were more enlightened than this, since we pride ourselves with having a more or less egalitarian society, in terms of gender.
“The commercial could have just as effectively driven home its message had the man been shown with his newfound ease in the kitchen. Or, it could tug at viewers’ heartstrings by showing him as he teaches his son or daughter to prepare a dish—to surprise his wife, who’s on her way home from work.
“Either of those approaches could go a long way in demolishing trite gender stereotypes and depicting a healthier image of marriage, in which husband and wife support each other to maintain a happy home life.”
