LOS ANGELES – Daniel Day-Lewis won best actor Golden Globe on Sunday for his title role in Steven Spielberg’s presidential drama “Lincoln” while Jessica Chastain won best drama actress for her role as a relentless CIA agent tracking down Osama bin Laden in “Zero Dark Thirty.”
Day-Lewis beat fellow nominees Richard Gere in “Arbitrage,” John Hawkes in “The Sessions,” Joaquin Phoenix in “The Master” and Denzel Washington in “Flight.”
“My fellow nominees, boys and girls, such beautiful performances this year. I’m very proud to be one amongst you,” said Day-Lewis, paying tribute to Spielberg as a “humble master with a quicksilver imagination” and a friend.
“You have given me an experience that I will treasure until the end of my life,” the actor said.
Chastain, meanwhile, beat fellow nominees Marion Cotillard in “Rust and Bone,” Helen Mirren in “Hitchcock,” Naomi Watts in “The Impossible” and Rachel Weisz in “The Deep Blue Sea.”
“I have wanted to be an actor since I was a little girl. I have worked for a really long time. I have auditioned and struggled and fought and been on the sidelines for years,” a visibly moved Chastain said.
“To be here now in this moment is a beautiful feeling, to receive this encouragement and support.”
She also paid tribute to film director Kathryn Bigelow, saying that she and Chastain’s character Maya were “two powerful, fearless women.”
