On November 25, Senator Pia Cayetano began her 18-day social media campaign, “#Speak Up,” to end violence against women. She was our guest at the Women in Media Forum’s “Bulong Pulungan at Sofitel.”
She disclosed that many women continue to experience violence in their own homes and suffer at the hands of their loved ones. The violence can either be physical, emotional, verbal, psychological, economic or sexual in nature.
Citing data from the National Statistics Office, she said that one in every five women aged 15-49 experiences physical violence, while one in seven married women is physically abused by her husband. Using her website, Twitter account (@piacayetano), and Facebook fan page, the senator launched the online campaign to celebrate the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women.
Cayetano said that people need to speak up, because defending women’s rights means standing up for human rights!
Women should have the courage to stand up against abusive husbands—and should have their own careers to guarantee financial security and independence!
