A rabbi who’s helping source out kosher (about what Jews can and cannot eat) and organic coconut water for a Texas pastry shop spoke to a Philippine company, but it couldn’t provide him with what he needed.
Then, the rabbi e-mailed the Star-K kosher agency that certified the Philippine company and asked if it could help him negotiate with the company without breaching ethical and business agreements. The final instruction: “Ask Joel.”
Joel Weinberger is a rabbi and a mashgiach—who inspects food preparations, supervises dining establishments, and explains kosher rules to Jewish and non-Jewish communities.
Weinberger has been a mashgiach in the Philippines for more than a decade now. For years, he provided pro bono service as a resource person to former Agrimarine division manager Joy Mulato and Tonette Salazar of the Department of Trade and Industry-Citem. The trio is helping spread the “gospel” of kosher certification here.
