Let me take all of you, my dear readers, once again down memory lane—to my memories, specifically. The year was 2001. The air still smelled of CK One and, sometimes, something else on the weekends (haha). Cargo pants were the pinnacle of fashion, Napster was still around, and the airwaves were dominated by the aggressive, testosterone-fueled collision of hip-hop and heavy metal known as nu-metal. At the forefront of that sonic assault, clutching a microphone and a surplus of attitude, was Josey Scott and his Memphis-born crew, Saliva.
The very first time I heard “Click Click Boom” was during my morning drive to school, tuned into one of my favorite FM stations. It served as my definitive introduction to the band. In my opinion, they were a grittier, more “street” version of the era’s elite Nu-Metal acts, but they certainly possessed a hook-heavy sound that catered to the masses. However, that specific track proved Josey Scott was a legitimate force as a rock vocalist—a talent who, by all accounts, should have remained a mainstay in the scene for a much longer time.
When they dropped “Click Click Boom,” they didn’t just release a kicka** single; they detonated a career-defining explosive that still echoes in sports arenas and action movie trailers two decades later.
The Anatomy of a Riff
From an objective standpoint, the brilliance of “Click Click Boom” lies in its sheer simplicity. The track is built on a foundation of syncopated, downtuned guitar chugging that honestly satisfies the “lizard brain” in all of us. It is exactly the kind of anthem that makes you want to drive slightly over the speed limit or hit a new personal best during a gym session or get into an MMA fight.
Interestingly enough, Josey Scott’s delivery is pure charismatic swagger here. He expertly balances those rhythmic, almost rap-influenced verses with a chorus that screams with the raw intensity of a man who just stubbed his toe but decided to turn that sudden pain into a platinum-selling record. To give you my dear readers a better idea of the vibe, it is punchy, visceral, and refreshingly lacks the pretentious bloat that eventually sank many of their contemporaries from that era. This is Saliva at their most undeniable signature.
Why It Sticks
Why am I digging this one out of the vault now? Honestly, I don’t know. Hahaha. Kidding aside, I am revisiting this track because “Click Click Boom” represents a specific era of fearless genre-bending in rock music. Long before every pop star had a mandatory “rock era,” Saliva was already unapologetically mashing together the swagger of Southern hip-hop with the raw grit of hard rock.
Is it high art? Hell no. More like trailer park trash rap-rock! Bwahahaha. But is it a masterclass in hook-driven songwriting and pure energy? Absolutely. It serves as a potent reminder that sometimes, music doesn’t need to be deep—it just needs to be loud, aggressive, and undeniably catchy. It is the sonic equivalent of a Michael Bay explosion (if you get my drift): you know exactly what you are getting, and you love every single second of the spectacle.
Unsurprisingly, twenty-plus years later, the track hasn’t aged into a mere “guilty pleasure”—it is just a pleasure, period. Hahaha. It remains the gold standard for high-octane anthems. If that opening riff doesn’t get your pulse jumping, you might want to check your batteries. Saliva caught lightning in a bottle here, proving that with the right hook and enough grit, you can create something timelessly aggressive that is worth listening to over and over again. Below or above—or perhaps somewhere in between (hahaha)—nested within this latest entertainment piece of mine, you will find the official music video for “Click Click Boom” by Saliva. /ra
